Post-Op instructions


  • Keep the leg elevated when sitting for the first 24 hours.  Get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour while awake.
  • Do not drive for 24 hours.
  • There are no diet restrictions.
  • The day of the procedure, you may return to normal daily activities with the following restrictions: no heavy lifting or aerobic activity for one week.
  • The compression stocking is to be worn 24 hours/day for the next week, removing it to bathe only. The second week after the procedure, the stocking(s) should be worn during waking hours only.
  • You may shower beginning 48 hours after the procedure. No tub baths until the Steri-Strips are gone.
  • DO NOT remove the Steri-Strips or clear dressings. They will fall off by themselves in 1-2 weeks. It is not unusual to see blood under the dressings.
  • Bruising is normal. You may feel a “pulling sensation” and/or leg discomfort for the first week after the procedure.
  • Pain Medications:
    • Mobic, 7.5 mg once daily for 7 days, or
    • Ultram, 1 to 2 tablets every 4-6 hours as needed, and
    • Aspirin, 325 mg once daily for 7 days
  • Make a follow-up appointment for one week for an ultrasound of the leg.
  • Signs of a blood clot may be:
    • Swelling in the affected leg
    • Pain in that calf
  • Signs of a blood clot breaking off to the lung may be:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Coughing up blood

If any of the above occur, go to the Emergency Room immediately.
