Many abdominal procedures are now performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive way of doing modern surgery. Instead of one large incision, multiple very small incisions are made and “ports” are placed to gain access into the body. A camera, the laparoscope, is inserted through one of the ports and the video is displayed on monitors. The work is performed with long, specially designed instruments. Laparoscopic surgery can reduce blood loss, risk of infection, recovery time, post-operative pain, risk of hernia occurrence, and superficial scarring. Operative times may be slightly longer due to the technical skills required, but hospital time and recovery time is reduced so the patient can return to normal daily activities.
