Day of Surgery – At Ambulatory Surgery Department

Prior to surgery, please arrange to be accompanied by a responsible adult to stay with you during the post-operative observation period and to drive you home following your discharge. You should not use public transportation without the presence of a responsible adult to accompany you.

IMPORTANT: MOST PATIENTS GO HOME THE SAME DAY. HOWEVER, IN THE EVENT YOUR RECOVERY IS DELAYED, A TRANSFER, ADMISSION, AND AN OVERNIGHT STAY AT CONWAY REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER MAY BE REQUIRED.

Emphasis should be placed on the following instructions:

  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT PRIOR TO SURGERY. THIS INCLUDES WATER, COFFEE, COLA & GUM.
  • If you take medications regularly at home, DO NOT take them on the day of surgery unless it is cardiac or pulmonary medication or unless your doctor has instructed you to do so. Take it at the time you usually do with a small sip of water. Please ask your doctor if you have any questions about this.
  • Please bring all your medications with you to the Surgery Department on your day of surgery.
  • Take a bath or shower before your surgery. Do not shave where the operation is to be done.
  • Please notify our office immediately of any changes in your conditions or the development of any other illnesses.
  • DO NOT – wear jewelry, watches, contact lenses, etc. DO wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • DO NOT – wear nail polish and/or make-up.
  • DO NOT – ingest alcoholic beverages, depressant drugs, or operate machinery until 24 hours after surgery.

We know that this is a very anxious time for you and your family. We feel that understanding what is happening to you can make your hospital visit more pleasant and even improve recovery. Please do not hesitate to call our office, if you have any problems or questions prior to your surgery.
